Glycyrrhiza glabra is an herbaceous legume that is native to the Middle East, southern Europe, and India. Licorice, sometimes spelled liquorice, is a favorite ingredient to sweeten herbal tea blends. Native to Western Asia and Southern Europe. Licorice root, which is considered one of the world’s oldest herbal remedies, comes from the root of the licorice plant.

Back in the days licorice sticks called ‘palu dushi’ were popular to chew on in Curaçao. Nowadays you can still find it as sticks in some pharmacy stores and mini-markets. The root can be decocted as licorice tea and infused as licorice extract. Licorice root is one of the most widely used herbs worldwide and is the single most used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today. Many people use licorice root to treat illnesses like hypotension, hormonal imbalances , heartburn, acid reflux, hot flashes, coughs, and bacterial and viral infections.
